Shavuot - Manhattan Beach

Shavuot – the Holiday of the receiving of the Torah. This is the Holiday that Moshe went up on Mt Sinai and got the 10 commandments. To celebrate this holiday we study the whole night, eat dairy foods and listen to the 10 Commandments being read from the Torah scroll.

Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach held an ALL NIGHT study group with Rabbi Winner. “The most interesting part of this night is the Q and A. We all had a chance to challenge the Rabbi, it was amazing”, said Lana a neighbor.

On Friday afternoon there was a special service for men, women and children to hear the 10 Commandment being read from the Torah scroll followed by a dairy Ice Cream party. Many ice cream flavors and topping where served, together with cheese cake and cheese blintzes.

Contrary to the weather channel, thank G-d, the rain held up. It was thus possible to have the planned Friday evening prayer service followed by Shabbat and Shavuot Dinner OUTDOORS in the Rabbi and Shula Winner’s backyard. Hundreds joined for this dinner which went late into the night.

Being that it’s a holiday that one cannot according to Jewish law take any pictures, the only pictures available are the ones that we will forever remember in our minds memory.

Challa Baking with Shula

Mothers and Daughters joined Shula Winner for a Challa Baking Class as part of the Jewish Women’s Night Out program.

It was an inspirational evening where everyone got to prepare their own batter from scratch, mixing their own ingredients and thus being bale to make the special blessing.

“Challa is one of the three unique Mitzvos specifically given to the Jewish women”, said Shula Winner, co-director of Neshama - Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach.

Lag B'omer - BBQ - Manhatan Beach

Young Russian-American Jewish families from the Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach communities joined together to celebrate Lag B’Omer – the 33rd Day of the Omer which is the Yahrzeit – Anniversary day of the passing of Rabi Shimon Bar Yochai – the author of the Zohar one of the most famous books of Kabbala.

It’s a custom to celebrate with an outdoor excursion and making fires symbolic of the holy fire that erupted over his casket on that fateful day of his passing.

Men, women and children enjoyed a most amazing Bar-B-Q, together with great company and celebration. There was singing and dancing around our bon-fire, where everyone had a chance to melt marshmallows.

Jewish Scribe Day @ Chabad Neshama Hebrew School

In honor of the upcoming Jewish holiday of Shavuot – when the Jewish people received the Torah from G-d on Mt Sinai – Chabad Neshama Hebrew School of Manhattan Beach presented the Jewish Scribe Day. The program and hands-on workshop was for parents and children from the Russian-American Jewish communities of Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach.



“We want children to realize how great our heritage is, by showing them hands-on it brings what we learn to life”, said Shula Winner – Co-Director of the Hebrew School.



The children learned how a Torah, Mezuzot and Teffilin are written, with a feather and ink on parchment all made out of leather. The children got to touch the teffilin and watch how the skins of an animal turn into parchment.

The children filled the outlined letters of their Jewish name with their very own feather quill which they each received to take home with them as a souvenir of this workshop.

Kabbala Lecture

"Colors of the Soul" was the title of this Kabbala Lecture. The soul is multi faceted and colorful, we’re spiritually fashioned and bestowed with 10 faculties. 3 intellectual and 7 emotional, the colors of the soul are the 7 different emotion.
The lecture included a general understanding of the emotions and focused on the details of the known emotion – Victory or ambition, the lecturer was Rabbi Avrohom Winner.
