What's Happening in Hebrew School?

Bat Mitzvah Club Manhattan Beach

The girls enrolled in the unique Bat Mitzvah program are learning and preparing for their Bat Mitzvas through interactive games and learning Hebrew skills. The girls are improving and finessing their Hebrew reading, as well as learning important basic Jewish concepts.

One week the girls discussed the laws and the importance of Kosher. Shula Winner took the girls on an exciting kosher hunt in a nearby supermarket. There is no doubt they will be very prepared for their Bat Mitzvahs when they come.

Giant Hanukkah Menorah Sheds light at Holocaust Park

The headstones at Holocaust Park glistened like proud beacons of hope as flames in enclosed lanterns bathed them with incandescent light from above.
From his plum seat on a cherry picker, 10-year-old Samuel Levit bobbed excitedly, and smiled and waved at the crowd below on West End Avenue, off Shore Road, before lighting a candle on the giant Hanukkah menorah to celebrate the fifth day of the joyous Jewish holiday, also known as the Festival of Lights.

The Hebrew school student was joined on his memorable ascent by his dad, Dr. Eyal Levit, and Rabbi Avrohom Winner, director of the Neshama - Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach, which organized the ceremony, and who continued the festivities back on level ground.

The time-honored rites commemorated not only the Jewish miracle of the oil, which burned for eight days after the re-dedication of the Temple of Jerusalem in 165 B.C., but also the flame in our souls, said the rabbi.

"Our inner menorah should illuminate ourselves, our families and our surroundings, and lead us to perform good deeds," he explained.
His wife, Shula, helped the spiritual leader distribute donuts and dance with the faithful to live music. "It's a big community event," said Winner, who gave each child a crisp dollar for “Hanuka Gelt”.

Chanukah @ OPM 2010

On the second night of Chanukah, Project Neshama - Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach hosted a lavish Chanukah Gala – Celebrating Jewish Pride at the OPM Hall.

The luxurious lounge was overflowing with delicacies, including salads, sushi, pastries, and, of course, an open bar with drinks for every taste. The attendees were mostly young Russian-American Jewish professionals from the Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach communities. Guests stayed well into the evening dining, talking to friends, and enjoying the beauty of the holiday.

Pre-Chanuah Funzone at Hebrew School

Every day is exciting @ Chabad Neshama Hebrew School, but on November 14th the students were treated with an extraordinary Chanukah Fun-Zone and Carnival.
The carnival was not just open to students but also to other children in the community. At one booth the children decorated cookies with pink and green icing, chocolate sprinkles, and, of course, rainbow sprinkles. Another booth featured a menorah lighting presentation, as well as an oil and water science experiment.

The oil and water experiment symbolized that just as oil rises, no matter the trouble or difficulty, a Jew can always overcome. A third booth involved menorah making. The children built fabulous menorahs out of different color and size tiles. Other booths included an olive oil and seal hunt and a live match it game.

The kids went home with arms filled with menorahs, treats, and special Chanukah prizes.

Special Needs Children Get Chanuka Gifts

This year the Chabad Neshama Hebrew School of Manhattan Beach took on a special mission: collecting toys to give to underprivileged and special-needs children as Chanukah gifts.

The Toy Drive was opened up to the entire community and the community really pulled through. The Rabbi’s house was jam-packed with brand new presents that the community had donated. The Hebrew School children enjoyed wrapping the toys with Chanukah themed gift wrap and colorful bows.

Rabbi Avrohom and Shula Winner, Co-directors of Chabad at Manhattan Beach went to various homes for special-needs children and shelters for the underprivileged, giving out the toys. “It was worth a million dollars to get a hug from these kids. It was truly a rewarding experience delivering the gifts.” Thank you to everyone who donated toys and to all those who helped deliver the gifts. We really made a difference to these children.
