Mendel's Upshernish

An upshernish literately means a “hair cut” this is at a time when a boy turns 3 years old. Customarily we don’t cut a child’s hair for the first 3 years of a boy’s life we let it grow wild. When he turns 3 the time that formal Jewish education begins we cut his hair.

The custom is for family and friends to get together and celebrate this beautiful milestone. For Mendel, Rabbi Avrohom and Shula Winner’s son's upshernish, many from the Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach communities joined in celebrating and giving their best wishes to the Rabbi and his wife.

Community trip to Home Depot

Russian–American Jewish families joined Rabbi and Shula Winner directors of Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach for a community trip to Home Depot.

“It gives the children the sense of responsibility and that satisfying feeling of trying something new,” said the Rabbi.

For some parents its their chance to show off to their children on how to use tools.

“What we are doing and reiterating at our programming is the importance of coming together as a community,” said Shula.

Bluma's Newborn Celebration

On Sunday, Jan 17, 2010 the community came together to celebrate the birth of Bluma.
The were many “l’chaims”, best wishes and joy at this special occasion. Bluma is named after Rabbi A Winner’s grandmother Bluma.

With best wishes to Rabbi Avrohom and Shula Winner the directors of Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach on this special occasion. May they be blessed with much Nachas from her in addition to the other children combined with health, wealth and Mazal.

Many perked up the courage and challenged the weather by joining Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach at this years Outdoor Menorah lighting. Not withstanding the downpour adults and children watched Rabbi Avrohom Winner and Dr. Leon Stepensky rise on the “Cherry Picker” crane and light the giant menorah at the Holocaust Park facing the Sheepshead Bay in Manhattan Beach.

“Its an inspiration to see the power of the Chanukah Candles, they tell us the story of Jewish courage, Jewish faith and triumph”, said Rabbi Avrohom Winner, director of Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach.

Chanukah @ OPM

Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach and W Brighton Beach held a Chanukah Gala - Celebrating Jewish Pride @ OPM. Many young Russian-American Jewish professionals from the Manhattan Beach and Brighton Beach communities attended.

The restaurant was made Kosher for the evening. The food was great, plenty of liquor and great festivities. The event included DJ Johnny Versace and renowned Illusionist David Blatt.

“Chanukah gives every Jew the ability to overcome his or hers personal challenges in life,” said Rabbi Avrohom Winner, director of Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach.

The dreidel has a pointed bottom as long as one is spinning they will not fall, G-d is the spinner if one is connected to G-d they will not fall, said Rabbi Zushe Winner, Director of Neshama – Chabad Lubavitch of W Brighton Beach.

The lavish buffet dinner and the abundance of Kosher wines and liquors kept the guests there for a great evening of celebration.

Many of the Russian–American Jewish community gathered with Rabbi Avrohom Winner director of Chabad Lubavitch of Manhattan Beach for a moment of prayer and inspiration at the grave-site of the Lubavitcher Rebbe – the Ohel.
